Brasília, October, 2009 - The US Embassy, in partnership with Casa Thomas Jefferson, is offering volunteers  of  Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the Federal District  fifteen (15) one-year English language  scholarships (100 classroom hours).  All textbooks and materials are included in the scholarship.  "Doing good make one feel good.  The English that the dedicated volunteers of various NGOs will learn at the Casa Thomas Jefferson will be essential for building long-term and solid bridges between the different segments of our society,” said the Casa Thomas Jefferson Director, Ana Maria Assumpção.
  

Owing to  the  work Non-government Organizations do in the Federal District in such areas as education, public health and social welfare they have become vital to the DF.   Many of these NGOs rely on the important contribution of volunteers to achieve their  goals.  

In a world where partnerships and the capacity to communicate with a global audience and with global partners are essential to success, learning English is important for those who work at NGOs.  "The primary objective of the above partnership is to strengthen the English skills of these volunteers so that they can more actively engage  with the NGO global community," the Chargé d'Affaires, a.i., Lisa Kubiske.

For those who wish to apply for a scholarship they must, candidates must submit the following documentation by November 20, 2009:

• Provide  a copy of their ID card verifying that they are over 18.
  
  
• Be enrolled  at a high school or provide a copy of their high school diploma.
  
  
• Be part of a disadvantaged socio- economic class – provide a copy of their employment book and, if necessary, a recent earning statement.  If an applicant  is not formally employed, they must provide a statement from their employer, or their contact information.  If unemployed, they must provide an income declaration from their guardians. They must provide an electricity bill for their residential address.
  
  
• Proof of address. (This can be the electricity bill listed above or another bill with current address).
  
  
• Be an active volunteer at an NGO and  provide a letter of recommendation from that NGO.
  
  
• Print and fill out the attached questionnaire. Click here

Those interested must  deliver all  documentation to the secretariat at  Casa Thomas Jefferson, Asa Sul branch (SEPS 706 /906 Conjunto B) by November 20, 2009.
